Cloud Platform Engineer – Virtualization & VDI Specialist
We are seeking a skilled Cloud Platform Engineer with deep expertise in virtualization and VDI management to design, implement, and support infrastructure solutions using VMware, Windows Server, GCP Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE), and Apache CloudStack. A critical focus of this role is leading and executing migrations from on-premises VMware environments to cloud platforms.
You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to build and maintain VDI environments that leverage our Azure, AWS, and GCP ecosystems. The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem-solver with proven experience in hybrid cloud setups, VMware-to-cloud migrations, virtualization orchestration, and
infrastructure automation—ensuring high availability, security, and scalability for end-user computing needs.
Key Responsibilities
- VDI Design & Management: Design, deploy, and manage VDI solutions using Apache CloudStack, integrating with VMware and Windows Server for virtual desktop provisioning, scaling, and optimization.
- Cloud Migration: Lead migration efforts from on-premises VMware workloads to GCP GCVE and other cloud platforms, ensuring compatibility and continuity with existing Azure and AWS infrastructures.
- GCVE Implementation: Implement and maintain GCP GCVE environments, including networking, storage, and hybrid connectivity configurations.
- Windows Server Administration: Configure and troubleshoot Windows Server-based systems (2012 R2 and higher) for VDI, including Active Directory integration, Group Policy management, and performance tuning in virtualized settings.
- SQL Server HA/DR: Design, implement, and support SQL Server High Availability and Disaster Recovery configurations, including Always On Availability Groups, failover clustering, and replication within cloud-based virtualization environments.
- Multi-Cloud Architecture: Collaborate with the Platform Engineering team to architect multi-cloud strategies, automating infrastructure as code (IaC) for VDIs across Azure, AWS, and GCP.
- Performance & Security: Monitor and optimize VDI performance, resource allocation, and security posture, implementing best practices for high availability, disaster recovery, and compliance (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA where applicable).
- Capacity Planning: Conduct capacity planning, cost analysis, and upgrades for virtualization stacks, ensuring efficient use of cloud resources and minimizing downtime.
- Incident Support: Provide technical guidance and support for incident resolution, root cause analysis, and proactive maintenance in production environments.
- Continuous Learning: Stay current with emerging technologies in cloud
virtualization and VDI, contributing to team knowledge sharing and
process improvements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a
related field (or equivalent professional experience). - 3+ years of hands-on experience with VMware technologies (e.g., vSphere,
ESXi, vCenter) in enterprise environments. - Demonstrated experience migrating VMware workloads to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)—this is essential for success in this role.
- Proven expertise in Windows Server administration (2012 R2 through 2022), including Hyper-V, integration with VDI platforms, and SQL Server HA/DR setups.
- Strong knowledge of VDI architectures, including user profile management, session brokering, and remote access protocols (e.g., RDP, PCoIP, Blast).
- Experience with GCP GCVE for VMware-based workloads, including setup,
networking, and hybrid connectivity. - Proficiency in Apache CloudStack for VDI orchestration, including zone management, template creation, and API integrations.
- Familiarity with multi-cloud environments (Azure, AWS, GCP), including networking (VPCs, VNets, subnets), storage, and identity management.
- Solid understanding of infrastructure automation and scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash).
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues in distributed systems.
Preferred Qualifications - Certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Microsoft
- Certified: Azure Administrator, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect.
- Comfort with Terraform or Terragrunt for infrastructure as code (IaC) management in multi-cloud setups.
- Experience with the Grafana LGTM stack (Loki, Grafana, Tempo, Mimir) for observability and monitoring in cloud environments.
- Experience with containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and its integration with VDI/virtualization stacks.
- Knowledge of security best practices for VDIs, including endpoint protection, encryption, and zero-trust models.
- Prior work in platform engineering or site reliability engineering (SRE) roles.
- Familiarity with cost optimization tools and FinOps strategies in cloud environments.
- Linux administration experience is a plus, but not required.
