Cloud Platform Engineer -Virtualization & VDI Specialist
Join our Platform Engineering Team, responsible for designing, migrating, and operating next-generation cloud and virtualization infrastructure. We deliver secure, scalable, and cost-effective platforms that eliminate legacy vendor lock-in while supporting mission-critical applications and end-user computing
(VDI). Our current focus is accelerating the transition from proprietary VMware vSphere environments to a modern, open-source-based stack centered on Apache CloudStack, Proxmox VE, and Ceph, with hybrid/multi-cloud integration across GCP, Azure, and AWS.
Job Summary
We are looking for a hands-on Cloud Platform & Virtualization Migration Engineer with deep expertise in VMware vSphere, VDI, and Windows Server environments who is passionate about leading complex migrations to open-source virtualization and cloud platforms.
You will play a central role in designing, executing, and optimizing migrations from on-premises VMware vSphere / vCenter / VDI deployments to a standardized, high-performance open-source stack using Apache CloudStack (for cloud orchestration), Proxmox VE (for KVM-based virtualization and VDI), and Ceph (for distributed block and file storage). The role combines migration leadership, VDI architecture, Windows/Linux guest optimization, infrastructure automation, observability, and hybrid/multi-cloud integration.
Key Responsibilities
● VDI Environment Assessment: Perform detailed discovery, dependency mapping, and risk assessment of existing VMware vSphere / Horizon / vSAN environments
● VDI Migration: Lead end-to-end migrations of production VMware workloads (VMs, VDI desktops, templates) to Apache CloudStack +Proxmox VE + Ceph environments with minimal downtime
● Standardized VDI Solutions: Design and implement VDI solutions using Proxmox VE and/or Apache CloudStack, including Windows 10/11 virtual desktops, session brokering, profile management, and protocol optimization (RDP, PCoIP alternatives)
● VDI Storage Implementation: Deploy, tune, and operate Ceph clusters optimized for VDI and IaaS workloads (RBD for VM disks, CephFS where needed, replication/erasure coding, caching)
● Hypervisor Deployment: Build and manage Proxmox clusters (HA, fencing, backup/restore, live migration) and integrate them as hypervisor resources within Apache CloudStack zones
● Windows Administration: Configure and migrate Windows Server environments (2016–2022) including Active Directory, Group Policy, SQL Server HA/DR (Always On, failover clustering), and VDI-specific
optimizations
● SQL Server HA/DR: Design, implement, and support SQL Server High Availability and Disaster Recovery configurations, including Always On Availability Groups, failover clustering, and replication within ACS-based virtualization environments
● VDI Networking: Design and implement networking migration (VLANs → SDN / OVS / Linux bridges, firewall rules, load balancing, hybrid connectivity to GCP/AWS/Azure)
● VDI Environment Operations: Automate infrastructure, migration playbooks, and day-2 operations using Ansible, Terraform, Python, PowerShell, and CloudStack APIs
● Performance Tuning: Optimize performance, security, observability, and cost of the new stack — including guest OS tuning (virtio drivers, cloud-init, open-vm-tools removal)
● Observability and Reporting: Support capacity planning, observability, disaster recovery, and compliance requirements
● Continuous Learning: Provide knowledge transfer, documentation, and training to operations and support teams on the new open-source platform
● Multi-Cloud Architecture: Collaborate with the Platform Engineering team to architect multi-cloud strategies, automating infrastructure as code (IaC) for Apache CloudStack across Azure, AWS, and GCP.
● Performance & Security: Monitor and optimize ACS performance, resource allocation, and security posture, implementing best practices for high availability, disaster recovery, and compliance (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA where applicable).
● Capacity Planning: Conduct capacity planning, cost analysis, and upgrades for virtualization stacks, ensuring efficient use of resources and minimizing downtime.
● Incident Support: Provide technical guidance and support for incident resolution, root cause analysis, and proactive maintenance in production environments.
● Continuous Learning: Stay current with emerging technologies in Apache CloudStack, virtualization, and relevant software contributing to team knowledge sharing and process improvements.
Required Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
● 5+ years of hands-on experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi/vCenter in enterprise production environments
● 3+ years of practical experience administering Windows Server (2016–2022) in virtualized/VDI settings, including Active Directory and SQL Server HA/DR
● Strong experience with Apache CloudStack and Ceph in production
● Proven success migrating VMware workloads (IaaS and/or VDI) to open-source KVM-based platforms (Proxmox, CloudStack, oVirt, etc.)
● Deep understanding of VDI concepts: desktop pools, brokering, profile management, remote display protocols, and guest OS optimization
● Proficiency with Linux systems administration (Debian/Ubuntu preferred) and scripting (Bash, Python, PowerShell, Ansible)
● Experience with virtualization migration tools (virt-v2v, qemu-img, OVF Tool, CloudStack converters)
● Solid knowledge of virtualization HA, live migration, storage (vSAN → Ceph), and networking concepts
Preferred Qualifications
● Hands-on experience deploying and operating Apache CloudStack with KVM hypervisors and Ceph storage
● Experience building Proxmox VE clusters for VDI or general-purpose virtualization
● Familiarity with Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE), Azure VMware Solution, or AWS VMware Cloud
● Strong experience with observability platforms, particularly the Grafana LGTM stack (Loki, Grafana, Tempo, Mimir) or similar modern observability solutions (Prometheus + Grafana, ELK, OpenTelemetry-based stacks)
● Certifications: VMware VCP, Microsoft (Windows Server / Azure), Proxmox VE Certified, RHCE, or equivalent
● Experience with Terraform / Terragrunt, GitOps, or IaC in multi-cloud & hybrid environments
● Experience with containerization platforms (Docker, Kubernetes) and hybrid integration patterns
● Previous work on large-scale migrations (100–1000+ VMs / desktops)
● Certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect.
● Knowledge of security best practices for VDIs, including endpoint protection, encryption, and zero-trust models.
● Prior work in platform engineering or site reliability engineering (SRE) roles.
● Familiarity with cost optimization tools and FinOps strategies.
